Statement
In the general adult population, habitual egg consumption (roughly one per day) meaningfully increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. Large prospective cohorts and meta-analyses reach opposing conclusions on both the direction and magnitude of the association, and any effect is entangled with total dietary-cholesterol intake, overall dietary pattern, and residual confounding — so the proposition is genuinely contested rather than settled in either direction.

Causal links
Because the egg–CVD causal claim is genuinely unresolved — large cohorts and meta-analyses split on direction and magnitude — official guidance swings with each new study, producing the public whipsaw and the erosion of trust in nutrition science.
Confounder-controlled, pre-registered designs (individual-participant reanalysis with harmonized covariates, or an RCT on hard endpoints) shrink the residual-confounding uncertainty that keeps the egg–CVD claim contested, moving it toward resolution.
